Stretch Marks
As maternal size increases during pregnancy, stretching
occurs in the collagen layer of the skin, particularly over
the breasts, abdomen and thighs. In some women the areas of
maximum stretch become thin, and stretch marks (striae
gravidarum) appear as thin red stripes, later changing
to glistening silvery white lines some 6 months or so after
birth. Clearly, its easier to try and prevent stretch marks
from occurring, rather than looking for an expensive
post-natal laser fix.
We use a combination of
daily self-massage and high quality creams and oils to help
to prevent stretch marks. Whilst there is little clinical
evidence that either massage or creams work, there is plenty
of anecdotal evidence as to their effectiveness, and we
strongly recommend it.

LEARN OUR SELF-CARE ROUTINE
We teach
a self-massage routine for abdomen, breasts and
thighs from 15 weeks. Unless you have prior
experience in massage and bodywork, we'd recommend
that you come and learn where and how to massage, and how much pressure to use.
You're welcome to bring your partner, and we can
teach both you and your partner this simple massage
routine in a single session.

PLEASE NOTE:
Oils and creams for your use are blended in
front of you so that you can see exactly what
they contain.

Abdominal Care
As the abdomen grows in size, we move mums-to-be onto our
special massage chair, and we give a relaxing abdominal
massage by kneeling behind the patient. Feedback says that
this is much more comfortable for the patient than lying on
her side on a massage couch. We believe that regular
abdominal massage is of great assistance in developing skin
elasticity and sp helping to prevent stretch marks.

Breast Care
Changes
to the breast are one of the things that women may
first notice when pregnant. Development of an
increased blood supply, milk-producing (acini)
cells and lactiferous ducts begin early in
pregnancy, and may cause tenderness and discomfort.
Ante
natal self-massage of the breast and nipples can
help to relieve the discomfort. It also helps to
prepare the breast for breastfeeding, and will help
to stimulate lactation after delivery.
Breast and nipple massage is done very gently.
Nipple massage in the last 4 weeks of pregnancy is
believed to stimulate the production of oxytocin,
which will help to "ripen" the cervix in preparation
for labour, harden the nipples for breastfeeding,
and promote a good supply of milk. |
