SELF
CARE ROUTINE
From 15 weeks, we teach a self-massage routine for self care of
your growing abdomen, breasts and thighs. This daily routine
encourages skin elasticity and helps to prevent stretch
marks. Our specially-formulated cream nourishes your skin at
this demanding time.
From 30 weeks we also teach perineal self-massage. Many studies
have shown that antenatal perineal massage significantly
reduces the risk of perineal trauma i.e. a tear or an
episiotomy, during childbirth. We strongly recommend daily
perineal self-massage from 30 weeks on.
“Antenatal perineal massage reduces the likelihood of
perineal trauma (mainly episiotomies) and the reporting of
ongoing perineal pain and is generally well accepted by
women.
As such, women should be made aware of the likely
benefit of perineal massage and provided with information on
how to massage”

reducing perineal trauma. Cochrane Database of Systematic

WHAT
HAPPENS WHEN I COME TO SEE YOU ?
If you have never been to an Aromatherapist before, we will
spend some time with you showing you our collection of
essential oils, creams and carrier oils, and allowing you to
smell those of your choice.
The first time that you come to see us, we will want to
review your medical history with you, to ensure that we are
able to help you, and that there is no reason why
Aromatherapy would not be advisable. If you are taking any
medication, please bring details with you. You can save time
on your first appointment by
registering as a web site user, and then completing both
the Personal and Pre-Treatment questionnaires.
Your comfort and well-being are very important. In addition
to using a standard massage couch, we also use a massage
chair which is ideal for back and abdominal massage in the
last few weeks of pregnancy.
To complement your treatment, we will also usually offer you
an oil blend or a blended cream for home use.
SAFETY
FIRST
To ensure
safety during pregnancy, there are some simple "do's"
and "don'ts" that MUST be followed:
WHAT TO DO, OR NOT TO DO |
|
WHY?
|
DON'T
apply undiluted essential oils to your skin, or take them orally.
|
|
It is not safe to use undiluted essential oils at home.
|
DON'T
apply any oil mix containing essential oils to your skin during the
first 3 months (first trimester) of pregnancy.
|
|
Essential oils cross the placenta. They may damage the developing
foetus. There's not yet enough clinical evidence to be certain that
essential oil use during the early stages of pregnancy is completely
safe.
|
DON'T
use any pre-blended oil mix at all during pregnancy, unless it has
been prepared JUST FOR YOU by a qualified Aromatherapist.
|
|
If it is
pre-blended and bought in a shop - even in a pharmacy, you have no
idea at all what's in the bottle. Cheap oil blends always contain
impurities.
|
DO
GET ADVICE
Ask your midwife, or your GP about massage and
Aromatherapy. For Aromatherapy advice, call us, or make an
appointment.
|
|
Safety
first. Essential oils are always used at very low concentrations
during pregnancy - avoid the temptation of mixing a blend yourself!! |
BLENDS
AND RECIPES FOR HOME USE
We'd suggest that whilst
pregnant you don't attempt to make your own blends from
shop-bought carrier oils, essential oils, and creams. For
safety reasons, this section of our web site doesn't contain
any recipe or blend suggestions. If you live too far away
from us, we're happy to supply you with pre-mixed oils and
creams at the correct strength by mail. We always certify
bottle contents.
PLEASE NOTE:
If you attend for treatment at our clinic, oils and creams for your use are blended in
front of you so that you can see exactly what
they contain.
|
BRING YOUR PARTNER?
Your partner is welcome to attend if you wish. We can teach
your partner a simple back massage routine in a single
session.
